STAINING FLOOR BOARDS

Staining a floor is a nice way of brining some warm, rich tones into a room. They look great with neutral or white colour schemes and add a touch of the dramatic with bolder colours. Bear in mind that staining a floor dark, will make the room look slightly smaller. So if you have a small room it might close it in further.

They wear well, but must be treated with care. If they get badly scratched the marks will show. You should attach felt pads to all the furniture that comes into contact with the floor, Together with careful cleaning should help prolong the life of the floor.

I mix the stain using pigment. The colures I mostly use are Raw umber, burnt umber, raw sienna, golden brown and red oxide. In different quantities (depending on the colour) with water. I then add some varnish to lighten. I can get most colours from oak to dark brown or red/brown from the pigment and have done lots of floors this way.I do a few test patches on the floor and when you pick the one you like I then start to stain the floor. It usually needs two coats of stain and two coats of clear varnish on top to seal it all in.

I can mix colours from pictures or if you have a piece of furniture that you like the colour of I can usually come up with a good match.
